Samtastic! Review: Compass releases in the US today

I am still in Jamie Lidell obsession mode, he really is the best.

This new album Compass is a much darker and drum heavy musical experience than I am used to from Jamie, but I also think it is somehow the most genuine and honest expression of his personality we have seen. This guy has feelings and character and an imagination and a sense of humor. I could compare snippets of this album to other artists, but I feel that Compass and Jamie Lidell himself are beyond all of them and Jamie's style is a modern thing unto itself. I like how he uses other voices on songs, but not as a gimmick, purely as layers of the sound overall. And there are A LOT of layers, I suggest listening to this album really loud or in earphones so you can hear it ALL.

Some of my favorite songs are "Completely Exposed", "Enough's Enough", "The Ring", "Compass", "Coma Chameleon", "Big Drift" and "You See My Light". I think this album is about heartbreak, and love, it's about conflict of wanting to be uninhibited and not losing yourself at the same time. I think it's really good. But I love him so I might be biased.

Samtastic! Review: Beck's Record Club doing New Sensation by INXS

Awesome, gots to love Beck. I have from the beginning. When the song Loser came out in what, 1993, my friends and I searched everywhere for a tee shirt that simply stated LOSER on it, so that we could pay daily homage to Beck...never did find that shirt, I could now probably if I looked for it.

Samtastic! Review: This might be good...Katy Perry California Gurls

I don't really see how this is a West Coast "answer" to "New York State of Mind" by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys...but this song might be a fun summertime song that I am sure will make tons of money and be looped on the radio and TV constantly. So, my question is, hate it, or give in the the guilty pleasure...I say give in. The lyrics are pretty freakin' silly, that's the point though, can't take POP like this too seriously. Besides, I don't think Katy Perry is going away anytime soon.

Wow, so I re-learned a very valuable lesson today by clicking on this video and listening to this song. The lesson is that just because a band has a ridiculous name, that does not mean that they will suck. Well, at least this song doesn't suck, I will have to review them further to make my final decision.
